  To our valued team and community,

  Well, we have moved fast and achieved so much during the past few months. Relentlessly releasing major version after major version… We got a lot done including several major new features !

  The speed of adding new features was a great showcase of how agile our small teams and the larger community are. And I’m so proud to see automated testing becoming common practice among everyone hacking on Piwik !

  For the next few months until the new year we will focus on making what we have better. We will fix those rare but longstanding critical bugs, and aim to solve all Major issues and other must-have performance and general improvements. The core team and Piwik PRO will have the vision of making the existing Piwik and all plugins very stable and risk free. This includes edge cases, general bugs but also specific performance issues for high traffic or issues with edge case data payloads.

  We’ll be more pro-active and take Piwik platform to the next level of Performance, Security, Privacy & Reliability ! We will prove to the world that Free/Libre Web software can be of the highest standard of quality. By focusing on quality we will make Piwik even easier to maintain and improve in the future. We are building the best open platform that will let every user liberate their data and keep full control of it.

• New Piwik 2.0 public beta for testers

  Dear Piwik community,

  We are excited to announce the release of the first public beta version of Piwik 2.0.

  This is software still in development and we really don’t recommend that you run it on a production site — set up a test database just to play with the new version.

  Piwik 2.0 is a major update from Piwik 1.12 and is the result of 5 months of work on the platform !

  What’s changed ?

  We focused on upgrading Piwik source code quality and maintainability : upgraded to PHP 5.3 using namespaces, changed templating library to Twig, started using composer, using Less as well as css, improved QA tests, introduced new Screenshots tests, refactored translations to nice JSON format, refactored LOTS of code, added documentation….

  There also performance improvements, in particular the “All Websites Dashboard” is now usable with 20,000+ websites !

  Several bugs were fixed and we added some very-special-and-exciting new features.

  How to update to Piwik 2.0 beta ?

  1. You can tell Piwik to use the latest beta from within the user interface. See this FAQ : [piwik.org]
  2. or alternatively you may download the latest beta from the build server, upload these files on top of your existing piwik files, and visit Piwik to upgrade.

  Beta cycle
  The more you test the beta, the more stable our release candidates and our final release will be. If you think you’ve found a bug, you can post it in this forum post. Or, if you’re comfortable writing a reproducible bug report, file one. The stable Piwik 2.0 release is planned for mid-November !

• 3 hidden Piwik features you likely don’t know, that will make you more productive

  At Piwik and at InnoCraft, we always aim to make features as intuitive as possible. Having thousands of features in Piwik and having to find a balance between beginners and advanced users can sometimes be a challenge. Sometimes this even leads to building hidden features that are mainly targeted for power users. The list below shows three of them, did you know any of them yet ?

  1. Search

  When you press the letter “f”, it will activate the search bar in the top left. Once you start typing something, it will show matching reports. Say you want to view reports about “devices” but don’t remember exactly which category it is in, simply start typing “devices” and the matching entry will show up without even having to move the mouse.

  The search bar also searches for matching websites and segments. Use the arrow up and down keys to select the entry you want and press enter to confirm the selection.

  Say you don’t remember the name of a report but you know it is listed under the category “Visitor”, then start typing the name of the category and it will show all related reports.

  2. Zen Mode

  When you press the letter “z”, it will activate the Zen Mode which lets you focus on the reports and content by removing the header and left menu. To disable the Zen Mode, simply press “z” again.

  This is especially useful in combination with the search bar mentioned above, as it enables you to quickly switch between reports, websites and segments even while menu and header are hidden.

  3. Faster period change

  Changing the displayed period is a task you likely perform quite often when analyzing reports. Usually, you would first select the period and then press the button “Apply” in the date selector. Instead, you can simply double click the name of the period and it will immediately load the selected period without having to click on the “Apply” button.
