ffprobe reports some wrong meta data but only when input is piped in
17 juillet 2020, par spinkusI have a video file and I'm using
ffprobe
to extract meta data from it. If I save the file to disk and runffprobe
everything works fine. However, if I pipe the input intoffprobe
most meta data is correct, but some fields, such aswidth
,height
,display_aspect_ratio
are not correct.ffprobe
reports these errors when input is a stream (see full outputs below) :

[mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2 @ 0x563c3de3c000] stream 1, offset 0x2c : partial file
[mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2 @ 0x563c3de3c000] Could not find codec parameters for stream 0 (Video : mpeg4 (mp4v / 0x7634706D), none, 1567 kb/s) : unspecified size
Consider increasing the value for the 'analyzeduration' and 'probesize' options

I tried various settings for
analyzeduration
andprobesize
with no change in outcome. I tried piping other even larger MP4 files into ffprobe and the height and width is reported correctly, and I don't get "stream 1, offset 0x2c : partial file" output warning. I think there is may be some issue with this particular file, but if that's the case why does it only cause issues when the file is streamed in ?

Any ideas what the issue is and how to get
ffprobe
to work same with a pipe as for a file input ?

FFMPEG fade in/out expressed in milliseconds
22 juillet 2020, par orestinoI working on a programmatic sketch to cut, crop and fade in/out audio from a single input video file.
Everything works pretty well except for the audio fade in fade out.

Everything work fine if I set a fade in and fade out time of 1 (or more) seconds. Here's my command :

ffmpeg -ss 0:1:11.10 -i INPUT_FILE.mp4 -filter:a afade=t=in:st=0:d=1.0,afade=t=out:st=55.867:d=1.0 -filter:v crop=720:720:138:0 -to 0:0:56.86 OUTPUT_FILE.mp4

Fade filter stop working if I set time less than 1 secs (say 100ms like the following example).

ffmpeg -ss 0:1:11.10 -i INPUT_FILE.mp4 -filter:a afade=t=in:st=0:d=0.1,afade=t=out:st=56.767:d=0.1 -filter:v crop=720:720:138:0 -to 0:0:56.86 OUTPUT_FILE.mov

I mean, ffmpeg is not complaining about any error but the output video file simply has no fade in or fade out.

Why ?
What I'm doing wrong ?

Thank you so much for your support

Combining three or more videos with ffmpeg and the xfade filter
25 février 2021, par silAs of 2020 ffmpeg has the xfade filter which can combine videos with a transition. Combining two videos is easy enough :

ffmpeg -i vid1.mp4 -i vid2.mp4 \
 -filter_complex [0][1]xfade=transition=pixelize:duration=1:offset=4,format=yuv420p" \
 out.mp4

But I don't understand how to combine three videos (so that v1 fades into v2 and v2 then fades into v3. I tried something like this :

ffmpeg -i vid1.mp4 -i vid2.mp4 -i vid3.mp4 \
 -filter_complex [0][1]xfade=transition=pixelize:duration=1:offset=4,format=yuv420p[0n1];[0n1][2]xfade=transition=pixelize:duration=1:offset=9,format=yuv420p" \
 out.mp4

but that doesn't work. My idea was that 0 and 1, or vid1 and vid2, would be combined into a [0n1] stream with a transition by xfade, and then that 0n1 stream could be combined with vid3 with another filter. As far as I can tell, this includes the first two videos but not the third. What this of course means is that I don't understand how to specify a filtergraph correctly !

How should I use xfade to combine 3 or more videos with transitions between them ?

A full example is as follows. Here I'll use three images (because then issues with combining videos at different frame rates are avoided), and smash them all to 500x500 for ease (in the final version they would be letterboxed to keep resolution and so on).

ffmpeg \
 -loop 1 -t 5 -i tests/p1.jpg \
 -loop 1 -t 5 -i tests/p2.jpg \
 -loop 1 -t 5 -i tests/p3.jpg \
 -filter_complex "[0]scale=500:500[s0];[1]scale=500:500[s1];[2]scale=500:500[s2];[s0][s1]xfade=transition=pixelize:duration=1:offset=4,format=yuv420p[s01];[s01][s2]xfade=transition=pixelize:duration=1:offset=9,format=yuv420p" out.mp4

I would expect this to create a video which was :

-

- 4 seconds of p1.jpg
- a pixelise transition into p2.jpg lasting 1 second
- 4 seconds of p2.jpg
- a pixelise transition into p3.jpg lasting 1 second
- 4 seconds of p3.jpg

but what I actually get is

-

- 4 seconds of p1.jpg
- a pixelise transition into p2.jpg lasting 1 second
- 4 seconds of p2.jpg

and then the video ends. p3 is not included at all.

The output is as follows :
