Ffmpeg input seeking - "Invalid NAL unit size"
30 janvier 2024, par DimitrisI'm trying to use ffmpeg to get a 10-second clip from the middle of a video. The execution time of the command is important, that's why I've decided to use combined input & output seeking (as illustrated here).
The input video file is a CMAF with fragmented MP4, duration of 10 minutes.


I'm testing on a Mac, Ffmpeg version is 6.1.1.


This is the command that I'm using :


ffmpeg -nostdin -y -ss 290 -copyts -start_at_zero -i https://devcdn.flowplayer.com/5f07362e-c358-41d0-857a-c64302a3fcc9/cmaf/17bdb16d-71d1-414c-a291-a028bd45b9ec/playlist_360.m3u8 -ss 300.0 -t 10 -vcodec libwebp -lossless 0 -quality 60 -compression_level 2 -loop 0 -an -sn output.webp



Result : no output file is created.


From what I understand it fails to seek position "290" in the video, probably due to "Invalid NAL unit size" errors.

What I've tried so far :

Downloaded the input file to a local directory and used it as input to ffmpeg - same results.

Used the mp4 file from the playlist directly as an input to ffmpeg - worked but execution time is very slow

Emmited the input seeking part (-ss 290 -copyts -start_at_zero) from the command - worked but also very slow in terms of execution time










Any ideas on why I'm getting "Invalid NAL unit size" and how to make the command work with input seeking ?

FFmpeg How to use alimiter Filter ?

I used -filter_complex alimiter=limit=0.5 and it applied to the file but it boosted the volume.
I thought it was supposed to hardlimit the volume down ?
FFmpeg says through cmd limit range [0.0625 - 1]
ffmpeg -i audio.wav -y -acodec libmp3lame -b:a 320k -ar 44100 -ac 2 -joint_stereo 1 -filter_complex alimiter=limit=0.5 audio.mp3

VLC syntax to transcode and stream to stdout ?

as a background process and control it through its remote control interface (more detail). I can load, transcode and stream a local video file. The example app below is a barebones testbed demonstrating this.Issue : I am getting data in to my app but it is not rendering as video. I don’t know if it is a problem with my VLC commands or with writing to/reading from
stdout
. This technique of reading fromstdout
in AIR works (withffmpeg
for example).One of the various transcoding commands I have tried :

Hoping someone sees where I am going wrong here.
Update 1 : Just to add some more detail (!) – I took a look at the .flv file that is generated to examine the metadata. It appears at the head of the file as shown below. I have the correct
onMetaData
handler set up and see a trace of this data if I play the file from disk. I do not see this trace when reading fromstdout
andNetStream
is inData Generation
mode. Is it possible that it isn’t getting sent tostdout
for some reason ? I’ve tried generating my own header and appending that before the stream starts – I may not have the header format correct.
Update 2 : So in my
AIR
app I was able to crudely parse the incomingstdout
stream coming fromVLC
. I wanted to see if the FLV header data was being sent – and it appears that it is. I don’t know if it is in the correct format, etc. but as I mention above, if I write to an .flv file instead ofstdout
, a valid .flv file is created.Completely at a loss now – have tried everything I could think of and followed up every web link I could find on the issues involved. Alas – so close and it would have been so cool to leverage
