  • HEVC with alpha [closed]

    3 mai 2024, par foxhable

    I trying create HEVC with alpha video from png images through ffmpeg.

    When i try, it outputs a video that works, has a transparent background and opens in QuickTime, but does not open in Safari. Then i try creating in prores 4444 codec and convert from macOS Context Menu -> Encode Selected Video Files with HEVC 1080p and Preserve Transparency. It has work - video with transparent background, open in QuickTime and in Safari.

    So i tried understand what a difference in meta data and only what i find its working video has HVEC encoder, but not working has Lavc61.5.103 hevc_videotoolbox. Can i somehow programmatically or from utilities like ffmpeg create video with HEVC With alpha, which working like from macOS context menu ? macOS context menu doesnt fit because i cant compress or create many videos

  • bad ffmpeg performace compared to ffplay and VLC

    18 août 2021, par Abdelsalam ElTamawy

    I've been having bad performance with ffmpeg that I don't see with ffplay and VLC. I find this strange since ffplay uses ffmpeg under the hood.

    Simply if I stream an HEVC/h265 stream with ffmpeg and pipe it to ffplay, it would stutter and perform worse than if it played the stream directly with ffplay.

    What I'm trying to say is that I expect this command ffplay rtsp://stream-ip to perform the same as ffmpeg -i rtsp://stream-ip -f matroska - | ffplay - but it doesn't, ffplay plays noticeably smoother. Also, if I try to stream it with VLC, it is as smooth as ffplay.

    here is the log for ffplay :

    I'm wondering why is this happening ? shouldn't hardware acceleration be applied in both cases ?

    Beyond this I'm trying to create a video mosaic, the performance problem becomes very clear when displaying the streams together in a command like this :

    $ ffmpeg -i rtsp://stream1 \
-i rtsp://stream2 \
-i rtsp://stream3 \
-filter_complex "[0:v] scale=960x540 [a0];
[1:v] scale=960x540 [a1];
[2:v] scale=960x540 [a2];
[a0][a1][a2] xstack=inputs=3:layout=0_0|0_h0|w0_0[out]" \
 -map "[out]" -f matroska - | ffplay -

    This performs much worse than trying the same mosaic in VLC. Is there something I'm doing wrong ?

    I want to note that it performs perfectly fine if I independently streamed all sources with ffplay at the same time.

  • ffmpeg can't extract a frame near the end of the video

    29 mars 2024, par Rob Allsopp

    From what I gather, using ffmpeg to fully decode a video should give me an accurate duration. If I use :

    ffmpeg -i my_vid.mov -f null -

    for a particular video, I get an output of :

    ...
frame=  901 fps=0.0 q=-0.0 Lsize=N/A time=00:00:30.52 bitrate=N/A speed= 247x
...

    But when I run the following command to extract a frame near the end, it fails :

    ffmpeg -i my_vid.mov -ss 00:00:30.450 -q:v 2 -vframes 1 test_frame.jpg

    outputs :

    Output file is empty, nothing was encoded (check -ss / -t / -frames parameters if used)

    Backing up to 00:00:30.000 with the ffmpeg command does get me a frame, however, and any time before that works as expected also. It seems like I should be able to get frames up to 00:00:30.520, though. What could be wrong here ? Am I misreading the duration output ?

    Here is the full output I get from the frame extraction command :

    > ffmpeg -ss 00:00:30.450 -i file_example_MOV_640_800kB.mov -q:v 2 -vframes 1 test_frame.jpg
