  • Streaming without Content-Length in response

    29 août 2011, par kain

I'm using Node.js, Express (and connect), and fluent-ffmpeg.

We want to stream audio files that are stored on Amazon S3 through http.

We have all working, except that we would like to add a feature, the on-the-fly conversion of the stream through ffmpeg.

This is working well, the problem is that some browsers checks in advance before actually getting the file.

Incoming requests containing the Range header, for which we reply with a 206 with all the info from S3, have a fundamental problem : we need to know in advance the content-length of the file.

We don't know that since it is going through ffmpeg.

One solution might be to write out the resulting content-length directly on S3 when storing the file (in a special header), but this means we have to go through the pain of having queues to encode after upload just to know the size for future requests.
It also means that if we change compressor or preset we have to go through all this over again, so it is not a viable solution.

We also noticed big differencies in the way Chrome and Safari request the audio tag src, but this may be discussion for another topic.

Fact is that without a proper content-length header in response everything seems to break or browsers goes in an infinite loop or restart the stream at pleasure.

  • ffmpeg error when using non root user

    29 août 2014, par mkern

I have installed ffmpeg and it works perfect if you are root or using sudo but it errors out when trying to use it as a non-root user. I have performed the same install on a test VPS and it installs without issue so it appears to be isolated to this cPanel server. I haven’t been able to identify why.

  • meaning of ffmpeg filter option values for modifying contrast/brightness/gamma

    5 septembre 2016, par benoy

Context : I am using ffmpeg for processing a raw video file in raw y4m format to mp4 at various brightness values for an experiment looking at OLED display performance. After looking at the ffmpeg documentation I was able to find the following filter (eq) for modifying the brightness of the video.
    https://ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-filters.html#eq

I used the information from the ffmpeg documentation and the following article (https://wjwoodrow.wordpress.com/2015/07/12/more-ffmpeg-hell/) to get videos with different qualities. But neither the ffmpeg documentation nor the article explains these values in detail.

Question : Now my query is that, what does these eq values range correspond to ? Is it a percentage ? For example,

    ffmpeg -i input_1080p24.y4m -vf eq=1:-0.5:1:1:1:1:1:1 -vcodec libx264 -b:v 8000k -s 1920x1080 -g 15 -n -r 30 output_1080p.mp4

gives me a output video with reduced brightness. But how do I quantify this brightness reduction ? Does this eq = -0.5 correspond to 50% reduction in original brightness ? In other words, is this a linear scale ?

This is my first post on stackoverflow. Thanks !
