9 Ways to Customise Your Matomo Like a Pro

How to customise your Matomo web analytics
To make major changes to Matomo (e.g., create custom dashboards or install new plugins), you’ll have to be a Matomo Super User (a.k.a. The Admin). Super Users can also grant administrator permissions to others so that more people could customise your Matomo deployment.
Most feature-related customisations (e.g. configuring a custom report, adding custom goal tracking, etc.) can be done by all users.
With the above in mind, here’s how you can tweak Matomo to better serve your website analytics needs :
1. Custom dashboards
Dashboards provide a panorama view of all the collected website statistics. We display different categories of stats and KPIs as separate widgets — a standalone module you can also customise.
On your dashboard, you can change the type, position and number of widgets on display. This is an easy way to create separate dashboard views for different projects, clients or team members. 2. Custom reports
As the name implies, Custom Reports widget allows you to mesh any of the dimensions and metrics collected by Matomo into a custom website traffic analysis. Custom reports save users time by providing specific data needed in one view so there is no need to jump back and forth between multiple reports or toggle through a report to find data.
For each custom report, you can select up to three dimensions and then apply additional quantitative measurements (metrics) to drill down into the data.
For example, if you want to closely observe mobile conversion rates in one market, you can create the following custom report :
- Dimensions : User Type (registered), Device type (mobile), Location (France)
- Metrics : Visits, Conversion Rate, Revenue, Avg. Generation Time.

3. Custom widgets
We realise that our users have different degrees of analytics knowledge. Some love in-depth reporting dimensions and multi-row reporting tables. Others just want to see essential stats.
To delight both the pros and the novice users, we’ve created widgets — reporting sub-modules you can add, delete or rearrange in a few clicks. Essentially, a widget is a slice of a dashboard area you can populate with extra information.
You can add pre-made custom widgets to Matomo or develop your own widget to display custom reports or even external data (e.g., offline sales volume). At the same time, you can also embed Matomo widgets into other applications (e.g., a website CMS or corporate portal).

4. Custom dimensions
Dimensions describe the characteristics of reported data. Think of them as “filters” — a means to organise website analytics data by a certain parameter such as “Browser”, “Country”, “Device Type”, “User Type” and many more.
Custom Dimensions come in handy for all sorts of segmentation reports. For example, comparing conversion rates between registered and guest users. Or tracking revenue by device type and location.
For convenience, we’ve grouped Custom Dimensions in two categories :
Visit dimensions. These associate metadata about a user with Visitor profiles — a summary of different knowledge you have about your audience. Reports for Visit scoped custom dimensions are available in the Visitors section of your dashboard.
Action dimensions. These segment users by specific actions tracked by Matomo such as pageviews, events completion, downloads, form clicks, etc. When configuring Custom Dimensions, you can select among pre-defined action types or code extra action dimensions. Action scoped custom dimensions are available in the Behaviours section of Matomo.
Depending on your Matomo version, you can apply 5 – 15 custom dimensions to reports.
Important : Since you can’t delete dimensions (only deactivate them), think about your use case first. Custom Dimensions each have their own dedicated reports page on your Matomo dashboard.

5. Custom scheduled reports
Manually sending reports can be time consuming, especially if you have multiple clients or provide reports to numerous stakeholders. Custom scheduled reports remove this manual process to improve efficiency and ensure timely distribution of data to relevant users.
Any report in Matomo (default or custom) can be shared with others by email as a PDF file, HTML content or as an attached CSV document.
You can customise which data you want to send to different people — your colleagues, upper management, clients or other company divisions. Then set up the frequency of email dispatches and Matomo will do the rest.
Auto-scheduling an email report is easy. Name your report, select a Segment (aka custom or standard report), pick time, file format and sender.
You can also share links to Matomo reports as text messages, if you are using ASPSMS or Clockwork SMS.

6. Custom alerts

7. Goals

When combined together, Goals make up your sales funnel — a series of specific actions you expect users to complete in order to convert.

3 types of data misuse
There are a few different types of data misuse.
If you fail to understand them, you could face penalties, legal trouble and a poor brand reputation.
1. Commingling
When you collect data, you need to ensure you’re using it for the right purpose. Commingling is when an organisation collects data from a specific audience for a specific reason but then uses the data for another purpose.
One example of commingling is if a company shares sensitive customer data with another company. In many cases, sister companies will share data even if the terms of the data collection didn’t include that clause.
Another example is if someone collects data for academic purposes like research but then uses the data later on for marketing purposes to drive business growth in a for-profit company.
In either case, the company went wrong by not being clear on what the data would be used for. You must communicate with your audience exactly how the data will be used.
2. Personal benefit
The second common way data is misused in the workplace is through “personal benefit.” This is when someone with access to data abuses it for their own gain.
The most common example of personal benefit data muse is when an employee misuses internal data.
While this may sound like each instance of data misuse is caused by malicious intent, that’s not always the case. Data misuse can still exist even if an employee didn’t have any harmful intent behind their actions.

The purpose of the GDPR is to protect residents within the European Union.

California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA)
The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) is another important data law companies worldwide must follow.
Like GDPR, the CCPA is a data privacy law established to protect residents of a certain region — in this case, residents of California in the United States.
The CCPA was implemented in 2020, and businesses worldwide can be penalised for breaking the regulations. For example, if you’re found violating the CCPA, you could be fined $7,500 for each intentional violation.
If you have unintentional violations, you could still be fined, but at a lesser fee of $2,500.
The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA)
If your business is located within the United States, then you’re subject to a federal law implemented in 1999 called The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLB Act or GLBA).
The GLBA is also known as the Financial Modernization Act of 1999. Its purpose is to control the way American financial institutions handle consumer data.
In the GLBA, there are three sections :
- The Financial Privacy Rule : regulates the collection and disclosure of private financial data.
- Safeguards Rule : Financial institutions must establish security programs to protect financial data.
- Pretexting Provisions : Prohibits accessing private data using false pretences.
The GLBA also requires financial institutions in the U.S. to give their customers written privacy policy communications that explain their data-sharing practices.
4 examples of data misuse in real life

1. Facebook election interference
One of history’s most famous examples of data misuse is the Facebook and Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2018.
During the 2018 U.S. midterm elections, Cambridge Analytica, a political consulting firm, acquired personal data from Facebook users that was said to have been collected for academic research.
Instead, Cambridge Analytica used data from roughly 87 million Facebook users.
This is a prime example of commingling.
The result ? Cambridge Analytica was left bankrupt and dissolved, and Facebook was fined $5 billion by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
2. Uber “God View” tracking
Another big tech company, Uber, was caught misusing data a decade ago.
Why ?
Uber implemented a new feature for its employees in 2014 called “God View.”
The tool enabled Uber employees to track riders using their app. The problem was that they were watching them without the users’ permission. “God View” lets Uber spy on their riders to see their movements and locations.
The FTC ended up slapping them with a major lawsuit, and as part of their settlement agreement, Uber agreed to have an outside firm audit their privacy practices between 2014 and 2034.
3. Twitter targeted ads overstep
In 2019, Twitter was found guilty of allowing advertisers to access its users’ personal data to improve advertisement targeting.
Advertisers were given access to user email addresses and phone numbers without explicit permission from the users. The result was that Twitter ad buyers could use this contact information to cross-reference with Twitter’s data to serve ads to them.
Twitter stated that the data leak was an internal error.
4. Google location tracking
In 2020, Google was found guilty of not explicitly disclosing how it’s using its users’ personal data, which is an example of ambiguity.
The result ?
The French data protection authority fined Google $57 million.

What is CRO Testing ?
CRO testing is optimising your site’s conversion funnel using a series of experiments designed to improve conversion rates.
A CRO test can take several forms, but it usually involves changing one or more elements of your landing page. It looks something like this :
- You hypothesise what you expect to happen.
- You then run an A/B test using a dedicated CRO platform or tool.

Types of CRO Testing
There are three core types of CRO tests :
A/B testing
A/B testing, or split testing, is when you test two versions of the same page against each other. Usually, the two pages have only one difference, such as a new headline or a different CTA.
In the test above, for example, we test what happens if we remove one of the affiliate links from a page. We hypothesise that conversions won’t change because these links aren’t effective.
A/B/n testing
A/B/n testing is when you test multiple variations of the same element on the same page.
Rather than just testing one headline against another, for example, you test multiple different headlines at once.
In the test above in Matomo, we’re testing a website’s original header against a wider and smaller version. It turns out the wider header converts significantly better.
Multivariate testing
In a multivariate CRO test, you test multiple different elements at the same time. That could mean testing combining a different headline, CTA button, and image.
Multivariate testing can save time because you test multiple elements at once and find the best combination of elements. But you’ll usually need a lot of traffic to find a statistically significant result.
Why is CRO testing important ?
Who doesn’t want more conversions, right ? Improving your conversion rate is the core benefit of running a CRO test, but there are a couple of other reasons you should do it, too :
Improve conversion rates
How well does your website convert visitors ? The average conversion rate of a typical website is 2.35%, but better-performing websites have significantly higher conversion rates. The top 25% of websites across all industries convert at a rate of 5.31% or higher.
