Help us to improve Piwik by sending anonymous usage data (and get usage data yourself)
At Piwik we have developed a new plugin named AnonymousPiwikUsageMeasurement. The opt-in and anonymised usage tracking information will be used by us to build a better product and a great user experience. The plugin can be installed via the Piwik Marketplace with just a few clicks in your Piwik installation. As a Super User simply go to the Administration and select Marketplace in the left menu. There you will find the plugin and can install it with just one click.
The plugin allows you to track usage data into up to three Piwik installations:
- demo-anonymous.piwik.org (enabled by default, can be disabled).
- your own Piwik (can be configured optionally)
- a custom Piwik (can be configured optionally)
The usage data that is sent to Piwik can be publicly viewed by anyone under demo-anonymous.piwik.org.
What are the advantages by tracking the data into my own installation?
You can see how your Piwik installation is used and how well your Piwik performs by checking the average generation time of pages and API calls. Use the Row Evolution feature to see how your Piwik is performing over time.
What is Piwik doing to make sure the data is anonymized?
We are very careful in what we track and we make sure to anonymize data that could contain user data.
- We overwrite the page title as the title could contain the name of the viewed website
- We remove any referrer information
- We replace URL paramaters with a predefined value apart from a few whitelisted ones to make sure no actual
token_auth
,CSRF token
or user defined value will be tracked - On demo-anonymous.piwik.org 3 bytes of the IP are anonymised (eg when IP is 192.168.1.1 we track only 192.0.0.0). We do not track nor collect your location and provider information.
- We do not track clicks on outlinks or downloads
When should I not install this plugin?
If you have developed a custom Piwik plugin that contains for example the name of your business in any of the following names we recommend to not install this plugin as it might be tracked:
- name of a plugin
- name of a controller action
- name of a report
- name of a widget
- name of an API method
Plugins that are installed via the Marketplace should not pose a problem as their names don't contain any user specific information such as the name of your business.
The data is tracked as efficiently as possible as to not slow down your Piwik server. If you already have some performance challenges with your Piwik, we recommend not to install this plugin.
Which data is tracked?
When the plugin is activated, the following data will be tracked:
- The pages and reports that are viewed
- The visitors' software and devices data like the used browser and the resolution
- Some clicks or interactions with certain selectors or buttons. For example we track an event when a segment is selected (but we do not track the actual segment name or value).
- In a daily task we track the following data:
- Piwik version
- PHP version
- Number of websites
- Number of users
- Number of segments
- How often which API method was called (only plugin name and method name but no parameters) and how long the API calls took on average.
Are there any prerequisites?
- If sending usage data to Piwik is enabled, the Piwik installation must be connected to the internet
- If tracking to a custom Piwik installation is enabled, your Piwik installation and your Piwik users must be able to connect to this instance
Where can I report any issues with the plugin?
If you experience any issues with the plugin please create a new issue. The source code is available under GPL v3+ on GitHub. We always appreciate pull requests and suggestions to improve this plugin.

How to get your Piwik plugin translated in many languages ?
About a year ago we introduced the Piwik Marketplace to make it easy for developers to share their plugins with all Piwik users.
As Piwik is currently available in 54 languages we would love to have as many plugins as possible available in at least a few of those languages.
Currently most plugins on the Marketplace are only available in English and sometimes some other languages. To improve this situation, we offer plugin developers the possibility to use the power of our translators community to get their plugins translated.
Some plugin developers are already using this service and some very popular plugins like BotTracker or CustomOptOut have already been translated in more than 10 languages!
Getting translations for your plugin
As long as you are developing an open source plugin hosted on Github, you may get in touch with us (translations@piwik.org) in order to get your plugin translated by the Piwik translators community.
You will need an account on Transifex.com. If you use Transifex with a social login, please ensure to set a password in your account settings. This will be required for fetching new translations into your plugin repository.
Importing your plugin’s strings in the translation platform
While doing the initial setup for your plugin, we will import your english translation file (
en.json
) in your Github plugin repository and we will configure an auto-update for this file. Source strings on Transifex will automatically synchronise with your plugin repository. When you change any string in youren.json
translation file, the updated English strings will automatically be imported in Transifex. How to fetch your plugins translations into your repository
As soon as we have set up your plugin within our Piwik project on Transifex and there are new translations available, you will be able to update your plugin translations using the Piwik console. You will need a locally installed Piwik with development mode enabled, and your plugin installed. To update the translations go to the Piwik directory on your development box and execute the following command:
./console translations:update -u {YourTransifexUserName} -p {YourTransifexPassword} -P {YourPluginName}
We are looking forward to seeing your Piwik plugins available in more languages! For more information, check out our Translations plugin developer guide.
Happy hacking,

A *hot* Piwik Community Meetup 2015 !
10 août 2015 — CommunityLast weekend I arrived in Germany to attend the Piwik Community Meetup 2015 and now I am in Poland. I joined Piwik PRO back in May as enterprise support project coordinator in North America. I am now writing this from the Piwik PRO main office in Wrocław, where I’ll be working from for the next two weeks.
The meetup was HOT in every sense! Berlin temperatures reached 35 degrees (celsius), as I finally meet in person several long-time, dedicated Piwik community contributors.

Pictures from the meetup preparation sessions
In the first leg of my trip I was in Berlin to meet Piwik community members and Piwik PRO staff to prepare for the 2015 annual Piwik community meetup. These are my notes taken during the meeting at the request of one of my colleagues. I also relayed live on Framasphère, Twitter and IRC.

More pictures from the Piwik meetup
This was harder than I expected, as I took notes with my laptop, pictures with my phone, wrote live to social media (using the Android Diaspora Native Web App), and used my laptop to relay on IRC. Going forward this requires better preparation, I was glad I had a few links and pictures ready before hand but it really requires intense focus to achieve this. I am glad presenters were patient when I requested repeating some of the ideas they shared. I am also a bit disappointed not much happened in IRC.
Two day preparation sessions
The discussions and session we had during the two days prior to the meetup are available here.
We gathered in rented apartments in Berlin, this reminded me very much of similar community gatherings and perhaps of BarCamp and, at a much smaller scale, UDS sessions.

A list of ideas of topics was initially submitted, we then proceeded to have scheduled sessions for open discussion. Several people shared their concern there was no possible remote participation which led to making public the Trello boards used/linked here.
Note: The Trello links below still have action items and notes that are pending bug report / feature requests filing which should happen over the coming weeks. Most importantly, many action items will need identifying leads for different community team including Translations and Documentation, and better coordination of coming community engagement.
Monday sessions consisted of the following subjects:
- What are Piwik values & how to communicate them? (see below for details)
- How to encourage and recognize new external contributors?
- How could we double the Piwik userbase?
- How Community can organise help resources
On Tuesday we met again to discuss the following subjects:
- Piwik Long Term support (LTS)
- How do Piwik.org (project) and Piwik PRO (company) sit together / are organized? – An important part of this session was about having better communication channels and improving the new team page (bug #8520 and bug #8519, respectively)
- Improving usability of Piwik e.g. for new users – this last session was not held has we ran out of time and prepared to go to the meetup venue.
Some more details about individual preparation sessions
What are Piwik values & how to communicate them?
The main subjects in this session were important changes proposed in the project mission and values. This was edited directly on on the wiki page on GitHub, some of the changes can be seen by comparing revisions.
Piwik mission statement (bug #7376)
“To create the leading Free and open source analytics platform, and to support global organisations and communities to keep full control over their data.”
Our values
- Openness
- Freedom
- Transparency
- Data ownership
- Privacy
- Kaizen (改善): continuous improvement
This was also presented by Matthieu Aubry at the meetup and is published in the Roadmap page. Bringing more visibility and perhaps having a top page for Mission and Values was also brought up.
Meetup agenda and notes
The official agenda is available here.
Many Piwik PRO employees stayed in Berlin for the meetup, and we had good participation although less than last year in Munich as my colleagues told me. Some were consultants, others staff from public organizations, universities, etc. In retrospect considering the very hot weather and summer holidays the attendance was good. I was very happy to arrive at the beautiful Kulturbrauerei and enter the air-conditioned Soda Club. T-Shirts were waiting for all attendees and free drinks (non-alcohol!) were welcome
