  • DIY video file streaming from linux/osx to iOS devices

    27 septembre 2016, par sfactor

This is for a hobby project. I want to learn about video streaming and also create something that’s useful for me as well.

The project should be able to run a server on my macbook and a client on my iPad that will allow me to watch the videos I’ve got stored on my laptop without having to copy them in my iPad over my wifi.

I know there are solutions like Plex, Air Video etc. that allow me to do it. But since my goal is to practice writing some client/server code, I want to create something myself with the basic functionality of these apps.

I figured I’d probably need something like ffmpeg and Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), but I don’t have a Apple developer account to be able to use it. I do have Xcode in my mac. So, some free 3rd party library for HLS or something equivalent. I also fond this tool called https://www.bento4.com.

How would I go about getting started with such an application and what are the libraries I could use to accomplish this ?

  • Encoding video for real time streaming

    15 septembre 2019, par lilroo

Miguel Grinberg’s article video streaming with flask, covers sending multiple JPG formatted images to a client through a multipart response to stream video to the browser.

After doing some reading, I quickly realized that MJPEG is not a real video format, JPEGs are not optimized for video streaming and MJPEG cannot be streamed to a HTML5 video element.

for my application (a screen sharing application written in python), I need to be able to encode and stream relatively smooth video (smoother than MJPEG anyway) in semi-realtime to the browser.

I think what I need to do is encode a video stream using a tool like FFmpeg and then send chunks of that output to a browser using a multipart response - however it doesn’t look like there is a way to get FFmpeg (using python bindings) to write to an in-memory buffer.

Is ffmpeg up to this task ?

I appreciate that this question may sound nieve, but I would be thankful for being pointed in the right direction.

  • HTTP Live Streaming, FFMPEG & FFSERVER, and iPhone OS 3

    17 novembre 2014, par jcnnghm

In iPhone OS 3, Apple has introduced HTTP Live Streaming which should allow live streaming of video from the internet. I am currently operating a webcam, which feeds into my server, and is then converted into a flv stream by ffmpeg, and streamed back out using ffserver. Does anyone know how to setup a video stream the iPhone can use using ffmpeg and ffserver ? I should be able to re-encode into just about any format on the fly.
