Announcing the first free software Blu-ray encoder
For many years it has been possible to make your own DVDs with free software tools. Over the course of the past decade, DVD creation evolved from the exclusive domain of the media publishing companies to something basically anyone could do on their home computer.
But Blu-ray has yet to get that treatment. Despite the “format war” between Blu-ray and HD DVD ending over two years ago, free software has lagged behind. “Professional” tools for Blu-ray video encoding can cost as much as $100,000 and are often utter garbage. Here are two actual screenshots from real Blu-rays : I wish I was making this up.
But today, things change. Today we take the first step towards a free software Blu-ray creation toolkit.
Thanks to tireless work by Kieran Kunyha, Alex Giladi, Lamont Alston, and the Doom9 crowd, x264 can now produce Blu-ray-compliant video. Extra special thanks to The Criterion Collection for sponsoring the final compliance test to confirm x264′s Blu-ray compliance.
With x264′s powerful compression, as demonstrated by the incredibly popular BD-Rebuilder Blu-ray backup software, it’s quite possible to author Blu-ray disks on DVD9s (dual-layer DVDs) or even DVD5s (single-layer DVDs) with a reasonable level of quality. With a free software encoder and less need for an expensive Blu-ray burner, we are one step closer to putting HD optical media creation in the hands of the everyday user.
To celebrate this achievement, we are making available for download a demo Blu-ray encoded with x264, containing entirely free content !
On this Blu-ray are the Open Movie Project films Big Buck Bunny and Elephant’s Dream, available under a Creative Commons license. Additionally, Microsoft has graciously provided about 6 minutes of lossless HD video and audio (from part of a documentary project) under a very liberal license. This footage rounds out the Blu-ray by adding some difficult live-action content in addition to the relatively compressible CGI footage from the Open Movie Project. Finally, we used this sound sample, available under a Creative Commons license.
You may notice that the Blu-ray image is only just over 2GB. This is intentional ; we have encoded all the content on the disk at appropriate bitrates to be playable from an ordinary 4.7GB DVD. This should make it far easier to burn a copy of the Blu-ray, since Blu-ray burners and writable media are still relatively rare. Most Blu-ray players will treat a DVD containing Blu-ray data as a normal Blu-ray disc. A few, such as the Playstation 3, will not, but you can still play it as a data disc.
Finally, note that (in accordance with the Blu-ray spec) the disc image file uses the UDF 2.5 filesystem, which may be incompatible with some older virtual drive and DVD burning applications. You’ll also need to play it on an actual Blu-ray player if you want to get the menus and such working correctly. If you’re looking to play it on a PC, a free trial of Arcsoft TMT is available here.
What are you waiting for ? Grab a copy today !
UPDATE : Here is an AVCHD-compliant version of the above, which should work better when burned on a DVD-5 instead of a BD-R. (mirror)
What’s left before we have a fully free software Blu-ray creation toolkit ? Audio is already dealt with ; AC3 audio (aka Dolby Digital), the format used in DVD, is still supported by Blu-ray, and there are many free software AC3 encoders. The primary missing application is a free software Blu-ray authoring tool, to combine the video and audio streams to create a Blu-ray file structure with the menus, chapters, and so forth that we have all come to expect. But the hardest part is dealt with : we can now create compatible video and audio streams.
In the meantime, x264 can be used to create streams to be authored using Blu-Print, Scenarist, Encore or other commercial authoring tools.
More detailed documentation on the new Blu-ray support and how to use it can be found in the official commit message. Do keep in mind that you have to export to raw H.264 (not MKV or MP4) or else the buffering information will be slightly incorrect. Finally, also note that the encoding settings given as an example are not a good choice for general-purpose encoding : they are intentionally crippled by Blu-ray restrictions, which will significantly reduce compression for ordinary non-Blu-ray encoding.
In addition to Blu-ray support, the aforementioned commit comes with a lot of fun extras :
x264 now has native variable-framerate ratecontrol, which makes sure your encodes get a correct target bitrate and proper limiting of maximum bitrate even if the duration of every frame is different and the “framerate” is completely unknown. This helps a lot when encoding from variable-framerate container formats such as FLV and WMV, along with variable-framerate content such as anime.
x264 now supports pulldown (telecine) in much the same fashion as it is handled in MPEG-2. The calling application can pass in flags representing how to display a frame, allowing easy transcoding from MPEG-2 sources with pulldown, such as broadcast television. The x264 commandline app contains some examples of these (such as the common 3:2 pulldown pattern).
x264 now also exports HRD timing information, which is critical for compliant transport stream muxing. There is currently an active project to write a fully DVB-compatible free software TS muxer that will be able to interface with x264 for a seamless free software broadcast system. It will likely also be possible to repurpose this muxer as part of a free software Blu-ray authoring package.
All of this is now available in the latest x264.

How to make Matomo GDPR compliant in 12 steps
3 avril 2018, par InnoCraftImportant note : this blog post has been written by digital analysts, not lawyers. The purpose of this article is to briefly show you where Matomo is entering into play within the GDPR process. This work comes from our interpretation of the UK privacy commission : ICO. It cannot be considered as professional legal advice. So as GDPR, this information is subject to change. We strongly advise you to have a look at the different privacy authorities in order to have up to date information.
The General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016/679, also referred to RGPD in French, Datenschutz-Grundverordnung, DS-GVO in German, is a regulation on data protection and privacy for all individuals within the European Union. It concerns organizations worldwide dealing with EU citizens and will come into force on the 25th May 2018.
The GDPR applies to ‘personal data’ meaning any information relating to an identifiable person who can be directly or indirectly identified in particular by reference to an identifier. It includes cookies, IP addresses, User ID, location, and any other data you may have collected.
We will list below the 12 steps recommended by the UK privacy commissioner in order to be GDPR compliant and what you need to do for each step.
The 12 steps of GDPR compliance according to ICO and how it fit with Matomo
As mentioned in one of our previous blog post about GDPR, if you are not collecting any personal data with Matomo, then you are not concerned about what is written below.
If you are processing personal data in any way, here are the 12 steps to follow along with some recommendations on how to be GDPR compliant with Matomo :
1 – Awareness
Make sure that people within your organization know that you are using Matomo in order to analyze traffic on the website/app. If needed, send them the link to the “What is Matomo ?” page.
2 – Information you hold
List all the personal data you are processing with Matomo within your record of processing activities. We are personally using the template provided by ICO which is composed of a set of 30 questions you need to answer regarding your use of Matomo. We have published an article which walks you through the list of questions specifically in the use case of Matomo Analytics. Please be aware that personal data may be also tracked in non-obvious ways for example as part of page URLs or page titles.
3 – Communicating privacy information
a – Add a privacy notice
Add a privacy notice wherever you are using Matomo in order to collect personal data. Please refer to the ICO documentation in order to learn how to write a privacy notice. You can learn more in our article about creating your privacy notice for Matomo Analytics. Make sure that a privacy policy link is always available on your website or app.
b – Add Matomo to your privacy policy page
Add Matomo to the list of technologies you are using on your privacy policy page and add all the necessary information to it as requested in the following checklist. To learn more check out our article about Privacy policy.
4 – Individuals’ rights
Make sure that your Matomo installation respects all the individuals’ rights. To make it short, you will need to know the features in Matomo that you need to use to respect user rights (right of access, right of rectification, right of erasure…). These features are available starting in Matomo 3.5.0 released on May 8th : GDPR tools for Matomo (User guide).
5 – Subject access requests
Make sure that you are able to answer an access request from a data subject for Matomo. For example, when a person would like to access her or his personal data that you have collected about her or him, then you will need to be you able to provide her or him with this information. We recommend you design a process for this like “Who is dealing with it ?” and check that it is working. If you can answer to the nightmare letter, then you are ready. The needed features for this in Matomo will be available soon.
6 – Lawful basis for processing personal data
There are different lawful basis you can use under GDPR. It can be either “Legitimate interest” or “Explicit consent”. Do not forget to mention it within your privacy policy page. Read more in our article about lawful basis.
7 – Consent
Users should be able to remove their consent at any time. By chance, Matomo is providing a feature in order to do just that : add the opt-out feature to your privacy policy page.
We are also offering a tool that allows you optionally to require consent before any data is tracked. This will be useful if a person should be only tracked after she or he has given explicit consent to be tracked.8 – Children
If your website or app is targeted for children and you are using Matomo, extra measures will need to be taken. For example you will need to write your privacy policy even more clear and moreover getting parents consent if the child is below 13. As it is a very specific case, we strongly recommend you to follow this link for further information.
9 – Data breaches
As you may be collecting personal data with Matomo, you should also check your “data breach procedure” to define if a leak may have consequences on the privacy of the data subject. Please consult ICO’s website for further information.
10 – Data Protection by Design and Data Protection Impact Assessments
Ask yourself if you really need to process personal data within Matomo. If the data you are processing within Matomo is sensitive, we strongly recommend you to make a Data Protection Impact Assessment. A software is available from the The open source PIA software helps to carry out data protection impact assessment, by French Privacy Commissioner : CNIL.
11 – Data Protection Officers
If you are reading this article and you are the Data Protection Officer (DPO), you will not be concerned by this step. If that’s not the case, your duty is to provide to the DPO (if your business has a DPO) our blog post in order for her or him to ask you questions regarding your use of Matomo. Note that your DPO can also be interested in the different data that Matomo can process : “What data does Matomo track ?” (FAQ).
12 – International
Matomo data is hosted wherever you want. So according to the location of the data, you will need to show specific safeguard except for EU. For example regarding the USA, you will have to check if your web hosting platform is registered to the Privacy Shield : privacyshield.gov/list
Note : our Matomo cloud infrastructure is based in France. That’s the end of this blog post. As GDPR is a huge topic, we will release many more blog posts in the upcoming weeks. If there are any Matomo GDPR topic related posts you would like us to write, please feel free to contact us.

Making Piwik more accessible
Web accessibility refers to the inclusive practice of removing barriers that prevent interaction with, or access to applications or websites, by people with disabilities. When sites are correctly designed, developed and edited, all users have equal access to information and functionality.
In Piwik 2.16.0, and with the help of high school students from the Catalyst Academy, we have made several improvements that make Piwik more accessible :
- Menu now include the ARIA metadata (to make menus easier to navigate and use)
- Page titles and various key tooltips have been improved (to give a better context to the data)
- Keyboard access has been much improvement and Piwik is starting to be usable with the keyboard ! (this is very useful as many users are not able to use a mouse, and they should be able to view Piwik reports with the keyboard only)
- ‘Skip to main content’ link (when pressing the TAB key) now skips the cursor to the page content.
- Search bar was further improved : try it by pressing the ‘f’ key (useful to open any Piwik report or page without using the mouse)
New user preference : display times either as 24h format or AM/PM format
Users can now select whether times should be displayed in 24h format (16:20) or in AM/PM format (4:20pm)
Other admins and Super Users are not visible to users with ‘admin’ permissions anymore
Piwik 2.16.0 just became even more respectful of your privacy : any user you created and assigned an “admin” permission will not be able to view all other usernames anymore. This change was requested by many Piwik users who rightfully preferred not to disclose all usernames to any ‘admin’ user.
As a result of this change, when a user with ‘admin’ permission (admin user) wants to give additional permission to another user (target user), the admin user will now need to know the target username and enter it in the Manage Users interface :
New Config file viewer
A new menu entry Administration > Diagnostics > Config file, lets Super Users view all config values in the UI :
This new screen serves several purposes :
- help Piwik administrators discover and learn about all the possible config file settings that Piwik offers.
- let Super Users and Admins easily view any overridden config.ini.php INI setting without having to open the config file on the server.
New report ‘Personal settings > Custom Variables’ displays custom variable usage
A new report visible to Super Users lets you see how your Custom Variables slots are being used, which ones are still unused, and how many times a given custom variable name was used.
Learn more about Custom Variables.
Improvements to Heartbeat feature to accurately count time spent on the last page
The heartbeat feature which lets you accurately track how long do visitors spend on your website, has been improved in 2.16.0. If you would like to measure how long do people spend on your pages (even if they don’t interact with your website or app), then consider using the heartbeat feature. Learn more in our guide Accurately measure the time spent on each page.
New AnonymousPiwikUsageMeasurement plugin
AnonymousPiwikUsageMeasurement plugin was created for those who would like to measure how their Piwik services is being used. This plugin also sends anonymised tracking data to our demo-anonymous.piwik.org which will help us learn how your Piwik is used and how we could improve the application. Learn more about AnonymousPiwikUsageMeasurement plugin.
Show a warning when Piwik is used as a SuperUser via HTTP
It is highly recommended to use HTTPS (SSL) for your Piwik server. If you are logged in as a Super User and viewing any Administration pages, you will now see a warning notification message at the top of the screen inviting you to use HTTPS :
MySQL 5.7+ support
The awesome Piwik community has helped us identify several issues with MySQL 5.7 support and Piwik is now fully compatible with the latest MySQL version 5.7+. Piwik is officially compatible with MySQL >= 4.1 and up to Mysql 5.7 ! Piwik is also compatible with MariaDB.
Better detection of new devices and robots
Our Device Detector library can now detect many new types of devices : smart TVs, new tablets and mobile phones, and more. New bots were added to our list of bots to keep your analytics report meaningful.
Learn more : What Device Detector is able to detect, About Device Detector.
New Referrer Spammers
Every week we keep updating our community-list of referrer spammers. More than 50 new spammers were added since the last Piwik release !
Note that the list of referrer spammer is automatically updated every week in your Piwik, so you need to wait at most one week to benefit from the very latest list.
Learn more about Stopping Referrer Spam in Analytics reports.
Ability to support new SMS providers to send Scheduled Reports by text message
When you create scheduled reports in Piwik, you can specify one or several email addresses (to send reports by email) and you can also configure phone numbers (so your reports are sent to your phone via text message). So far we only support one SMS Provider “Clockwork SMS” but it is now possible for anyone to create a very simple plugin that adds a new SMS Provider to Piwik.
A new SMS Provider plugin was released on the Marketplace : FreeMobileMessaging. If you have a favorite SMS Provider, we encourage you to create a new plugin for it !
Piwik PRO mentions
A few new mentions of Piwik PRO were added into Piwik to let users know that they can get Professional Help, and additional services and products. For example a new widget was added to the default dashboard. If you provide your Piwik service to your own clients, maybe you would like to remove the Piwik PRO widget and other ads, see this FAQ : How do I remove from Piwik the links to “Piwik PRO” or to “Professional Services” ?
Stability, Reliability and Performance
Dozens of other bugs were fixed (including several Major bugs) and many small improvements are included in this release. All these changes make Piwik more stable and reliable, as well as easier to troubleshoot and maintain. We are proud to be able to offer Piwik 2.16.0 as our Long Term Support release !
If you have any feedback, questions, suggestion, or bug to report, please join our Piwik Community Forums.
We hope you will love this 2.16.0 release as much as we loved making it.
Happy Analytics !
