  • FFmpeg os.system commands not working but work in Terminal

    I’ve downloaded ffmpeg through the website and ran some commands through the terminal to confirm its install.

    when running the command ’ffmpeg’ in the Terminal it returns

     ffmpeg version 4.2.2 Copyright (c) 2000-2019 the FFmpeg 
    
 developers
    
 built with Apple LLVM version 10.0.0 (clang-1000.11.45.5)

    if i type into Python

    import os
    
os.system ('ffmpeg')

    it returns

     os.system ('ffmpeg')
    
 sh: ffmpeg: command not found
    
 Out[25]: 32512

    any ideas ?

    Solution :

     ffmpeg = '/bin/ffmpeg' #path to the binary file
    

    
 os.system(ffmpeg)

    Output :

  • Any way to assign terminal output to variable with python ?

    I need to grab the duration of a video file via python as part of a larger script. I know I can use ffmpeg to grab the duration, but I need to be able to save that output as a variable back in python. I thought this would work, but it's giving me a value of 0 :

    



    cmd = 'ffmpeg -i %s 2>&1 | grep "Duration" | cut -d \' \' -f 4 | sed s/,//' % ("Video.mov")
duration = os.system(cmd)
print duration


    



    Am I doing the output redirect wrong ? Or is there simply no way to pipe the terminal output back into python ?
